The house: An 18th century, two-story colonial, also called a New England Large, or simply a New Englander The location: The historic seaport town of Newburyport, Massachusetts. The project: Rescue this home from years of asbestos siding, bad carpentry, vinyl windows and other indignities. Turn it into a family home for Nancy, her son and her future heirs. The players: Mostly Nancy and her son, Jude, a student at the University of Massachusetts. Various part-time carpenters, electricians and plumbers, some of whom listen to Nancy. Work to date: Replace rotted sills, tear down 20th century kitchen addition and replace with a new addition more in keeping with the style of the house. Rip off asbestos siding, replace rotted clapboards with new cedar clapboards, rebuild upstairs bathroom. Target completion date: Sometime in Nancy's lifetime.
