Comments from our editors:
With just a piece of canvas, some water-based paints, a sewing machine, and a few basic painting tools, you can create a beautiful floorcloth.

Once little known among decorators, these Colonial floor coverings are making a comeback.

A painted floorcloth is lightweight, durable and economical. Floorcloths were first used in the 18th century and continued to be popular until the early 20th century, when they were replaced by linoleum.

This book contains examples of the works of more than 60 floorcloth artists, and includes directions on making nine basic floorcloths.
