Re: hardie board
You know what you want (and we here agree with you)! He either is so used to vinyl siding that he thinks fake wood grain (which real painted wood clapboards NEVER show) or you're right, he's trying to sell you on the Cedar Mill because that's what's sitting in your driveway. It is possible that the ...

Re: Lime Plaster AGAIN - what to do for patching
Thanks, James & Casey - I thought I didn't want hydraulic, and that's all that VLW seems to sell dry. Putty (bought or homemade) that gets better with age sounds more like my style, as I'm likely to start a project and then get side-tracked! The enviro-ment has frustratingly little info on it online...

Lime Plaster AGAIN - what to do for patching
I'd better finally patch my upstairs hall this summer before yet another winter's heat leaks into the attic & roof space (it's a Mansard so the roof is behind one wall). I have holes where wiring was done - biggest maybe 9" x 3 feet along the top of one wall - and a large area (about 2' x 3') where ...

Re: Things that Make a Yard Ugly
Haha! I thought mary in a bathtub was an acadian thing, along with trampolines and swinging chairs. And I thought it was a Somerville (or Northeast urban) thing . . . http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshmichtom/sets/374600/ I actually hardly see them here any more - but 25 years ago when I was living ...

Re: Victorian Holiday Decorating
i like eric's idea of a outlet under every window...dang i bet i have 25 ext cords in the house for the candles...but under every window i have a radiator  My dad is quite enthusiastic about some battery-powered LED candles he got a couple years ago - no cords, and they come on at a set time &...

Re: Old lath and plaster walls Real soft feeling
Hope you don't mind a bit of a post-hijack here; Have any of you tried the "Plaster magic"? It almost looks too good to be true. . . I've used it on a bit of my hall ceiling (just a corner, and there's more to do, but overhead work is so miserable I've been procrastinating on the rest for YEARS). T...

Re: Dry-walling around collar ties in attic remodel?
Just be sure to use some sort of flexible sealant around the beams or cracks will open up at their ends that will leak heat - I would hope that's standard practice now, but my previous house (a 1950s ranch) had decorative beams across the LR ceiling. Each penetrated the drywall to fasten to the jois...

Re: First Post
I know I'm late to this party, but just wanted to say, I don't believe the Mansard section will look right with anything but slate!!! (or a faux slate). There are lots of Mansards around Somerville & Cambridge so I get a chance to see them. I am so unhappy that my slates disappeared years ago. I rep...

Re: 1926 Home - I NEED HELP!
the foundation for the addition is cracked, has been my entire life. OK, I know this thread hasn't been touched for a while, but I couldn't resist . . . This might be a good thing. Has the crack moved/changed significantly in your lifetime? If it hasn't, then the foundation is doing what it's suppo...

Re: Anyone interested in greening their home?
I have maybe once in decades had a problem with bird poop, but that reminded me of an unexpected problem I also had when I left my laundry out overnight - cat spray (pee)!!! And right back in the washer that (whatever) went!!! This is more a danger with racks than with a line, as everything i...
