I'm surprised it was never converted to oil or gas which was common. Many of these old things would eventually crack in the phlenom dome creating a Co2 safety issue. They were purely convection heat but worked remarkably well. Typically had HUGE duct work to transfer the heated air without blowers. ...

Were the original porch boards 5/4?? i thought they were still 3/4 back then but I honestly haven't paid much attention to that. Are your boards tongue and groove?

Sometimes dreams can come true. How much are you willing to give for a wall mount rack unit? I just removed one here at work, it's probably 3 ft tall. It's dirty but just hose it off.

I watched a HGTV show one time where they removed the popcorn by spraying down the ceiling with water and letting it soak. They then just used a 6" scraper and removed the popcorn finish, it came right off. IIRC they lightly sanded the ceiling to open up the painted finish to allow the water to soak...

If you want the paint to breathe, which I agree it should, then I would look into Lime paint.

Wow that's a beautiful job on that porch. I'm sure you've thought of it but I'd be tempted to replace the lower lattice work with your beautiful Ballister design.
