I had pretty poor luck with anything Japanned...any rubbing at all, or paint removal took the finish/copper with it. :( I ended up painting them afterwards...which was a huge improvement over the originals with white paint spattered all over. Yep, those size/type--that's what puts the spring in your mortise lock.

Yeah, I would definitely start taking things apart and seeing what you can see. I was able to get just about everything working, and the couple that were an issue I used a dremel to fix the holes in the catch to fit. I would be very curious to hear what quotes you end up getting for the project. Our POs had plans drawn up for a garage that matches the house exactly and after factoring in the wood siding and shakes, the cheapest bid we got was $40k (and that's with the pad already poured).
