You watch "Psycho" for the first time, and all through the movie you keep thinking... 'what a great Queen Anne Victorian'... 'ooh, the woodwork!'... 'look at the newel post lamp'... 'I wonder where I can find wallpaper like that'...
I was so distracted I didn't have time to be scared!

Found original light fixture! (No, not really, but funny)
"You know you're an old house owner when..." ... you gleefully wade through mountains of junk in basement, attic, garage, or any other outbuilding looking for original doors, storm windows, or light fixtures that were originally in your old house! We have two "sheds" at our farmhouse that we got alo...

Facade revealed!
I'm going to dive right into the picture because I'm so pleased! Farmhouse Facade Oct 26 2011.jpg DH got all the rest of the siding and strapping off the front of the house this week while I was busy supply teaching. We also got internet at the house, which is why I can post this now instead of wait...

Re: We found the missing door! (Facade progress)
So many great comments to respond to! Warren - yes, the ferry was ruling our life for a while there. :-) It stopped running on Sunday, though, for the winter. Now we have to drive up to the swing bridge that connects the north-east corner of the island to the closest mainland. It means a 575km drive...

Re: Nice to hear
If you offend my house by uttering the words "vinyl" or "trex", you will be escorted off the property. A young carpenter friend of mine related a conversation between Bob, the 76-year-old carpenter he works with, and someone building a new house on the island. Bob: "I see ya went with the plastic w...

Re: Something exciting in our 1800's commercial building...
Every time I read something particularly painful I just take a deep breath and tell myself: "I'm not responsible for their spelling, they're not my students!" (unless a misspelling results in a cool pun, then I usually can't resist commenting *ggg*). Me too... but I have to say, I will definitely n...

Re: We found the missing door! (Facade progress)
Thanks for all the lovely comments... at the end of a not-so-great day, this makes me feel good! MelissaKD, we call it an "Ontario Cottage", but I really don't know if that's correct! There are tons of houses of that general shape on the island. Lynners, yes, lots of these doors too! My dad calls th...

Re: 1911 bathroom project - help!
I hope we haven't scared you off, HydePark! I finally found the bathroom picture I was looking for, although it's not as useful as I'd hoped: Queen Anne cottage bathroom small.jpg And you can see a bigger picture at this link: http://serialenthusiast.blogspot.com/2011/10/old-bathroom.html (Click on ...

We found the missing door! (Facade progress)
Hey folks; My husband and I had a couple of days to devote to our crazy concrete 1913 farmhouse this past week. There was in fact a gable door under the siding, just as I suspected! Here's the original facade with some of the original red paint showing, plus three kinds of siding on top: farmhouse f...

Hi 1834cobblestone! I actually clicked on this board by mistake (heading for post-1900), but I'm struck by how it looks like my cabinets might have been made by the same 'crafts'person who made yours! Check this out - even the hinges and handles are the same! farmhouse kitchen small.jpg I was also g...
