Re: Steve Job's Mansion

abandoned homes should be taxed more. We have a homeless problem and an affordable home problem. leaving homes to rot should be against the law...... This past winter we went to Rhiolite NV ( supposidley the best ghost town ) and I was shocked that a whole town had disintigrated in less than 100 ye...

Re: Steve Job's Mansion

Add another "computer geek"(also network engineer/architect) to the list of old stuff appreciators  I've actually found a lot of my peers are very interested in "old things" and preservation, perhaps because a lot of that demographic is also pretty well diversified in their interests and are s...

Re: What style is our house?

Ours started out like this just a couple years ago, all rotted, windows blown out, etc. So they can really come a long way

Re: What style is our house?

Great carriage house, very similar to ours, although we don't have a separate side door. I love the doors and high slate roof. http://s686.photobucket.com/albums/vv222/mrscramer2000/?action=view¤t=house035.jpg Attached is about 80% done. I haven't taken a photo of the doors all finished with b...

Re: Best way to clean efflorescence from brick?

Question, will the Muriatic acic/water mix cause any harm to paint(exterior latex) if it peppers it as I brush the nearby the brick? Just trying to plan ahead if I need to cover the wooden trim with plastic.

Thanks,
Al

Re: Steam radiators

I "second" the "store them and document where they came from" suggestion 8) Although there is a cottage industry in refinishing/refurbishing radiators, for the most part there is a glut of them available and they end up being smashed for scrap :( Part of the problem, actually a LARGE part of the pro...

Re: Compact fluorescent bulbs in old light fixtures

I'll echo prior posts that with a little trial-error one can definitely find the right CFLs for the job  Just as little as 2 or 3 years ago, it was indeed somewhat difficult to find odd shapes, dimmable, and "warm" CFLs that were appropriate replacements for incandescent bulbs. And I was on th...

Re: Stevan Thomas Vintage Stoves - Be Aware

Yes, it is a shame.... all around for everyone, customers, the industry, and even for Mr. Thomas(Radakovich) in that he had a thriving business that many would have loved to have :( The current status is that the KSAG has been awarded a default judgment. The latest Hutchinson News article: http://ww...

Re: Best way to clean efflorescence from brick?

Yeah, the efflorescence is "old" from when there were holes in the roof, eaves, and rotten gutters. That was all fixed over the last 5 years or so, but we still have some spots on exterior walls that I'd eventually like to clean off, especially since our brick is a very dark, almost purple-red. So t...

Best way to clean efflorescence from brick?

I've known people to use a diluted muriatic acid solution for cleaning efflorescence from brick but wondered if that is still the recommended method. I especially wonder as some of my brick is close to painted wood and near plants I'd rather not kill. Any tips on what works best but is least damagin...
