Re: How many layers of paint did YOU have?

I'm lucky in the fact that the only wood work inside the house that has been painted was the back stairwell trim. as soon as I realized that trim only had two coats of white I knew I was to strip and refinish it. the top layer rolled right up with stripper and the bottom layer took a little more tim...

Re: Will you ever rent your house out?

my house is also a Duplex so yes. We did however buy the house so my M.I.L. could move in. She is disabled so this keep her nearby but gives us all room. I highly doubt I could rent the house to strangers. when we purchased the house there was one tenant with 6 months left on her lease so we had to ...

Re: OMG... My heating bill is huge

this is our first winter in our house. I was quite worried and had budgeted $500 for each month of the heating season. We added insulation to the attic in December and our worst heating bill was for Feb at $390. that's for about 4000 sq ft worth of 80 year old house. I'm fine with that. so much for ...

Re: Bringing down the price of gas

My way of reducing what I pay in gas has been a bicycle. In fact I have a basement full of them. three I got for free and fixed up for about $50 each. Another I traded a friend a case of beer and a new part for his truck ($50 again). I also have a small trailer I can pull behind one of my bikes that...

Re: family under construction

another show I knew I shouldnt watch. the only one I can really handle is that renovation addict. its a local lady and she seems to like to preserve houses and understands their age. one episode she actually had some tiles made to match the originals on the wall of a bathroom and simply replaced the...

Re: Blower door test and thermal scan

I have heard from both home inspectors and energy auditors that there is no payback in replacing historic windows. Now I just need to convince my fiance of that... I had one quote for $39,000 to replace the windows in my place. do yo uknow how many years it would take to get that back in savings? i...

Re: Can I use Peel Away 1 after Citri-Strip?

what is your final wipe process with the Citru strip? Im using that on the trimwork in my back stairwell and im using a brass bristled brush with mineral spirits to wipe off the remaining "scuzz" and its working quite well.

Re: Why didn't anyone warn me...

I blame each and everyone of you for giving me the idea to strip the woodwork in my back stairwell. Actually, as I began repainting the back hall my wife asked how hard it would be to strip and restain the trim. I then realized that the trim only had two coats of paint and I just couldnt bring...
