I would guess it was a cistern to catch rain water. We had a functioning one in our 1800s farmhouse in upstate NY. My sisters & I thought it was an in-door pool! Mom could use the soft water in our washer. I think it was poured concrete; it didn't leak at all.

I love the two organs in the earlier pictures especially the pipe organ! Also congratulations on your new son Oliver! Our front hallway is a kind of Wiliamsburg blue but looks green The wainscoting in the dining room is a deeper shade of the same color.
