Difference Between Coal and Wood Burning Fireplaces

Is there a difference between coal burning vs. wood burning fireplaces? In the 1895-1900 farmhouse I am on schedule to be in this time next year, we naturally assumed the fireplaces were wood burning as each has the old ash dumps. Currently, gas log lines were run up the old holes and they will need...

Re: TOH

Now its time for me to get on my soapbox. These two comments really bother me. I am in no way condoning what TOH is doing to this Victorian, a Scandanavian interior in a Victorian home is in no way responsible. However, houses need to evolve with age. My house is 230 years old. It's located on a ma...

Re: Attempted break in....

I haven't gone out yet to purchase one (been buying antique furniture... but it would be a good idea to buy something to protect my furniture with...), but I use my friend's .9mm Glock for practice.

Re: I Feel Like I am Cheating...

I must say that with the house that has been getting renovated, I have not put a dime in the house myself or done anything other than the equivalent of good cleaning. My money was going to go into the place as soon as the bank approved the purchase. My schedule has been rediculous this past summer, ...

Re: Attempted break in....

As my friend and concealed-carry instructor says, "Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6!" I made sure I know how to shoot, and can handle a .9mm very well, I am proud to say. I hope and pray I should never have to use it, but it helps to actually think any scenario through so should it actual...

I Feel Like I am Cheating...

I feel like I am cheating. On the house we have been fixing up... I looked at another house... Ran into a hiccup on the 1900 farmhouse that I was planning on purchasing this coming summer (the foreclosure-my-friend-bought-because-I-couldn't-buy-it-as-the-bank-wouldn't-mortgage-it-so-he-asked-...

Re: Before and After, Thus Far! (Pictures)

Forgot to add... somebody also forgot to let Fido out quite a few times some years back. There's dog urine stain in several places in the parlor as well as one spot in the kitchen. I guess the only thing that can be done is to put a rug over it.

Floor Restoration Complete

The floor restoration is now complete! The company did an excellent job. The floors on the main floor are oak, and upstairs are pine. (Save the best for the guests, I suppose.) They were even able to save the old parquet floor in the "sunroom"--a porch that was closed in sometime during the '50s. Wo...

Re: TOH

Oh, this is my pet peeve!! TOH is not the same as it used to be. I have not seen this show, but this is an oxymoron. "This Old House" is not supposed to be about old-shell-new-interior, but ALL old! Good grief, if people want to have a new house, they need to build a stinkin' new one and leave these...
