Re: Snobs snobs snobs what is a snob??????

If something original to the house is damaged beyond repair or unsafe, then by all means remove it and replace it with something tasteful and modern. But ripping out or irreversibly defacing critical original characteristics of the house just because they're "dated" is what gets to me. It makes me ...

Re: Snobs snobs snobs what is a snob??????

Note that there is a world of difference between the people who do those things in their own home, which is something I seriously admire and wish that I could do, verses someone who looks down on those who cannot or choose not to do so.

Re: Snobs snobs snobs what is a snob??????

LOL! I'd define a snob (in the context of an old house community) as someone who looked down on anyone who didn't do everything the same way they would -- especially someone who would be critical of anyone who didn't (for example) strip off everything that PO's did and replace it back to original st...

Re: thinking about purchasing home in low middle class area

One last thing I'd look at as best I could is the general direction of that neighborhood. Is it staying steady in terms of condition of the houses, crime rates, number of unoccupied houses, etc? Are more and more houses being bought and fixed up? Or have things been noticeably declining in the past ...

Re: thinking about purchasing home in low middle class area

What a beauty of a house!! My experience with owning a home in a borderline neighborhood (Germantown in Philadelphia, in case anyone's familiar with it) is that it's very true that you really can't expect to increase the value of the home substantially above that of homes that are similar size and f...

Sad "renovation" of a lovely mid-century home

The original divider? The first thing they ripped out. That delightful original knotty-pine kitchen that looked to be in excellent condition? Replaced with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, of course.

Ugh.

Fair price for a used appliance?

Not old house related (other than that it's for an old house), but is there any rule of thumb about what is a fair price to pay for good condition used appliances -- in this case a 5-6 year old used stove? I'm looking for a price compared to a similar thing brand new. Is 1/2 the new price fair? 1/4?...

Re: My latest purchase. Not what you might be expecting....

This is a hugely contentious issue in our home. I am very adamantly against firearms - handguns in particular - especially since we have young kids in the house. But my spouse loves to shoot at the range; it relaxes her, and she's really pretty good at it - when she keeps up with it. She also feels ...

Re: How many of you have fire escapes in your old houses?

FYI hardwired also have battery backup, so that if the power's off the individual alarms will sound, they're just not connected. I'm very doubtful that I would have run wires if they weren't already here, but I would have probably gotten the wireless connected ones just because I really really REALL...
