I like the grey color. Blue is not always lightfast, and could fade strangely.

Also, it is likely to be a *lot* bolder than you think, and you may end up being known as the Smurf House.

You might try removing the modern paint on the slate with denatured alcohol. That dissolves acrylic paint, and shouldn't damage anything else. You could make a poultice and soak the paint.
