I've done this before, and yes, you can leave them till next Spring.
However, you will probably have to do a bit of sanding as the putty will have some spaling, but not too bad to worry about.

Try some variegated vinca minor for the space closest to the house.
Takes deep shade and has pretty purple flowers.
Go with the variegated type though to help lighten up the area.

Aluminum would be fine for gutters. They make them on-site, and have lots of different designs to choose from. You can get them already colored (not a ton of color choices though), or paint them yourself. That means future upkeep though. You need to also think hard about where the downspouts have to...

Probably for the same reason that every house listed that's even within 5 miles of my historic district, gets labeled as being in the historic district.
That always chapped my butt when we were looking for houses.
