Cast Iron pipe and strange clay thingy --what is it?

--There is a pipe that sticks out of the ground outside my kitchen wall close to the foundation. Today I decided I should probably dig it up get rid of it. After a lot of digging I discovered it is attached to what appears to be a large clay pipe thingy. The vertical pipe appears to rotate as though...

Re: Problem with Framing--need help

Funny thing though I think they also moved the stairs to that Location. Oh well. I guess once they had finished with the stair moving They thought" Darn we can't exit through this part of the House we need a doorway". So they just cut an opening right at the Bottom of the stairs. I'm not sure if thi...

At least two of the Studs on that wall have either been cut and are Just resting on the doorframe ( sans header). And One stud has been ...

Re: Amish homes

Loved the pictures also...When i gutted my kitchen I thought long and hard about how I wanted it to look when finished. Collected many images of kitchens. One thing kept coming up.I didn't want it to have any Granite, or modern minimalist European cabinetry. I wanted the more organic, primitive look...

Re: Problem with Framing--need help

Just had another look at the framing ( pulled out some insulation). It appears that the 1st floor studs ( kitchen) are attached to the floor joists or the other way around and the 2nd floor studs are nailed to the other side of the joist. Did one of my little diagrams. Hope this helps explain more c...

Re: Problem with Framing--need help

Just checked and the floor joists for the 2nd story are in fact nailed to the sides of the studs. There does not appear to be a top header. The one that is to the left side of the window meats with a header and is nailed into the side of a floor joist above. it appears that to the left of this stud ...

Re: Problem with Framing--need help

Jeapnstein...Are you suggesting that I cut all the studs right up to and including the studs on either side of the window, or all the studs right across the wall and insert a double top header?. Yikes!!! I guess I don't like the idea. How do I know that the second floor wouldn't just come down on my...

Re: Neighbors disrespecting property boundaries

Just read this post...Join the club...my neighbor regularly rides his ATV through a break in the bush and up and down my driveway. One day I even caught his friend trying to drop a round bale over the fence, that was on the end of the bale spike on his tractor while the tractor was on our side of th...
