Re: Need advice: Removing paint from hinges

If its a 3 hinge door, then remove them 1 at a time. As long as you arent swinging the door back and fourth too much, it would certainly be able to handle missing a hinge for the short period of time while you are stripping it. Re: My big-fat, historic renovation...

I have 2 sisters that live in Sandwich, and I dread schlepping down there any weekend from may-sept!!! I ...

Welcome Trevi!! You are doing an AWESOME job so far. I remember seeing that house on the list of houses the state was offering up for curatorship. Best of luck and keep posting the pics!!! :)

Re: Dating a Secretary...

Hey Vaso, Your desk is a "Spinet Desk", modeled after the small piano's back in the day. They are very cool. I would date yours to 1915-25...somewhere around there anyway. Re: Uncovering an Architectural Treasure - Finished Pics...TADA!

Thanks for the compliments Oldhouselvr. Almost all of the furniture in that room I got at various auctions. The parlor set is Eastlake, and its "ebonized". Funny thing about that set is I got the rocker years before, and at another auction I got the other 5 pieces. Amazingly (and I didnt even notice...

Re: Uncovering an Architectural Treasure - Finished Pics...TADA!

So...after 3 weeks...ITS DONE!!! YEY!!! Doing this meant also repainting the entire room, and then of course the curtains looked shabby, and the hardware needed polishing...so it was a bigger project than anticipated. Its not perfect, but pretty darn good! The lighting underneath really finished it ...

Re: Stone wall oddity

Hmm...seeing that your brick wall backs right up to the kitchen, I would guess that there was/is the remnants of a chimney behind there used for venting a wood/coal cookstove. My house has a massive we are talking 6ftx3ft chimney behind a wall in the kitchen. It is no longer in use, and one of these...
