Re: Losing my Century Silver Maples

I'm so sorry, downtowndahlgren. That is just heartbreaking.

How soon will you be able to replant? Because there will be someone in 50 and 75 and 100 years who will be made so very happy by the trees you choose!

Re: How many of you have fire escapes in your old houses?

Mine are battery powered, not hardwired, so I can't help you there. We've lost power twice since we moved in a little over a year ago. Once for three full days. So, I'm not getting smoke alarms that'll cut off when the power goes out. Plus, one should replace CO alarms every 5 years or so. And pulli...

Re: New old window question

I've got 105-year-old double hung wood windows. And I clean them right where they are. It's a little bit of a dance moving them up and down and hanging my arm out or bending it up from the bottom. But it's not really that tough. Just takes a little extra time. I had tilt-in metal (aluminum?) windows...

Re: WHY???

Don't you have fire codes for building clearances? Those building can't be more than 5' apart. Oh honey, this is New Jersey! "Rules" only apply to the people who aren't family. Or can't pay. The sad thing is, I was really using that second shot as an example of "I used to think this was ugly". (My ...

Re: How many of you have fire escapes in your old houses?

To flesh out my answer will full safety details... We've got two habitable floors plus an attic and basement. I've got 4 combo photoelectric smoke and CO detectors, and they're linked. They also say where the smoke or CO is being detected. I've also got 4 separate ionization type smoke detectors. Ea...

Re: WHY???

I don't know if there's any way anyone could ever find those pink & peach fake stone house-made-to-look-like-three-townhouses-but-with-the-back-of-the-house-on-the-front-oh-and-have-you-noticed-my-enormous-garage-yet things anything but ugly. I mean, I used to think this was as ugly as a house could...

Re: How many of you have fire escapes in your old houses?

Right now, I'm working on restoring what will be our bedroom. Getting the vinyl flooring, which was glued directly to the wood floors, out of there. And then starting in on stripping the trim. Once I get that room livable, and we move into it, I'll be putting in an out-the-window flexible escape lad...

Re: Where to hang pictures in a room with a plate rail?

Ooooooh, I know, a small jar containing the ashes of the burnt pillow shams! :D Awesome. If there is space, what about using easles to display larger pieces of art. Even awesomer. That's a really great idea. I'm not positive that there's room in this room. But that would work in other rooms in the ...

Re: Where to hang pictures in a room with a plate rail?

We don't have any pics of family past our immediate family. And, how do I put this politely...we really strongly dislike our immediate families. I think I was mostly hoping that someone would have an ingenious idea I hadn't thought of that would allow me to hang the art we've got. I should hav...
