Re: Window restoration season again! Weight question...
Here are the "grommets" - I have no idea what else to call these. The 1 on the right is for the top sash and the 1 on the left is for the bottom 1...

Here is the control mechanism on my nieces windows... Thoughts on how to refurbish these? Redo2012-06-21_15-51-40_465-1.jpg The top is on the left.... A rope and pully system on 1 end and a long spring on the other. These are set through the long grooves along the side of the sash - where the ropes ...

Re: New member here
 Stunning! Thanks for the peek inside - your stairway is so inviting and "homey" feeling. It just makes you want to come in and sit a spell. And that is without furnishings! And attic pictures ~ YAY!! I LOVE attic shots - it is constant turmoil for me between the potential for expansion into ...

Oh my goodness, what an amazing house!! Your window project would throw me over the edge - I have simple 1 over 1 double hungs that are almost more than I can take  Thanks so much for posting pictures - and of coarse now I want to see inside... Edited to add : Welcome officially! We ...

Re: Window restoration season again! Weight question...
Interesting new twist with this window - I was not able to get one of the weights out through the pocket door. I jimmied and pushed and pulled and banged, but with the length of the weight I just couldn't angle it out through the hole. I had to tie the cord by reaching through the hole... So cutting...

I have heard the the Spot cord is best - I have been ordering Sarco type M on line for putty, so I have this goofy idea that I should at least patronise "Mom-n-Pop" hardware store for their cord... it does have the nylon core, so I am hoping to get some longevity out of it. After a bit of crafty jim...

Re: Removing water stains on wainscoting
Yikes - I know that frantic, sickening feeling all to well. Right down to the water pouring out of the light fixture in the ceiling  Our pantry flooded a few years back (similar story) and the water ran down the doors. They were stained quite severly in some places... Ours are a light shellac...

Re: More in progress pictures
Wow! I so humbly bow down to you folks who so painstakingly strip paint from the trim in your homes  Thankfully the only painted surfaces in my house are the window sash - not the trim or aprons etc - just the sash. And I am HATING stripping just that minimal surface area. I am totaly fascina...

Re: 100 Year Old Wainscoting Re-finishing tips?
I put the denatured alcohol in a spray bottle and then spritz, rub with fine steel wool, wipe the grime away with a paper towel and repeat. The steel wool will work the bumps down. It almost re-distributes the shellac - then you should have a nice smooth surface for your fresh coat of shellac. Can't...

Re: Window restoration season again! Weight question...
I have literally been cruising the alleys in hopes of finding glass large enough- I thought I hit the jack-pot when a local church held a sale last fall; $5 a sash for the windows they had replaced in their parsonage (a large 3 story built within 5 years of our home!), beautiful sash too - none of i...
