Upstairs Hallway (Pics)

Postby sooth on Fri Mar 02, 2012 10:33 pm

I am nearly done painting my upstairs hallway (which I suppose you could say is the 3rd "mostly complete" room in the house so far).

The colour I picked is from the BeautyTone Designer Classic Palette (but I got a colour match done with Behr Premium Paint & Primer in One) called Uber Luxe, which is a taupe-brown. It looks much lighter on the swatch, but I actually wanted a pretty dark colour for the hallway (to really make the door casings "pop") and I absolutely LOVE how it's turned out.

For now, all you get is a teaser photo, but I'm doing the final coat in about an hour from now, then it will dry overnight. Tomorrow I peel the tape, do touch-ups (if needed), and take good photos (which I will post).

The colour in this photo is close, but not 100% accurate.

And as a refresher, this is how the hallway looked on the day I bought the house. Please note the awful laminate, badly installed/modified trim, doorways at different heights, etc.

Things left to do in the hallway:

- Paint floors
- Redo attic door & paint it
- Transition (wood) piece at bathroom threshold
- Hang some art!

That looks great! I have to say that seeing the afters first, I thought "This looks nice." But when I saw the befores, I said to myself, "sooth did an amazing job bringing back this hall!". Can't wait to see the finished results.

Also hoping you will include a photo of the shade for that light fixture...if you wouldn't mind. :D

Certainly!

I just posted the finished photos to my personal house blog, so here they are!

The colour appears to be a bit more yellow/mustard in most of the photos, but this is because of the incandescent light bulb. The second and last photos show the colour off the best.

The dark colour in the hallway also makes the blue-grey-green shade in the bedroom appear much more blue (which I like), and it blends-in well with the bathroom beige, and the slate tiles.

Oldhouseluvr: The light fixture was assembled mostly from spare parts from other restored fixtures I've bought for the house. It's just a 2 1/4" shade fitter, some spare links of chain (which I have lots of), a new (repro) canopy, and a spare antique shade.

Hallway viewed from the Master Bedroom:

This is the best shot of the actual colour. I would say it reminds me of wet sand.

Note: The built-in linen closet was not there originally. I enlarged the two closets for the adjoining bedrooms on the left, and installed this custom-made (by me) cabinet to help add some much needed storage space for linens, towels, and other items. The door and drawers for it are not made yet.

That looks amazing - awesome colour choice and nice clean edges. Those "things" in the baseboard inside corners are awesome too.

I call those "corner stakes". I'm actually not a fan of them, but they make it very easy to install baseboards, and they're original to the house (although many are missing). In that entire hallway, only 1 of the 4 is original.

Looks great! And thanks for sharing the shade. We have an identical (or nearly so) fixture in DD's bedroom. We have a similar shade, but change it out for a more contemporary look fitting a 14 yo.

The details in the shade are rather hard to see in the photos I posted, but I didn't have any better ones. The top portion has tulip-like petals coming down from the top, and the bottom is a ribbed band with a few Xs across these.
