Peel Away chem paint remover

Postby Leslie Ap on Sun Nov 08, 2009 3:00 am

Used Peel Away 6, on a spot on the buffet. Cut through all the paint, with no elbow grease. Left the application on for about 12 hours. Looks like we have more beautiful fir to admire- yay! Tomorrow, I'm going to try heat gunning a section before the application, and see if that affects the dwell time. Based on the reviews I've read about Peel Away and similar products, my conclusion is that a different product and/or process will be most effective for each painted surface. With so many combinations of layers of oil and latex, shellac. poly, etc, etc... I think you have to experiment to find what will work best for your situation. I'm just psyched to be dialing into what works in our house. Yipee!

Oh- and NO odor. None.

Seems like a lot of extra time and effort to put in unless you have nooks and crannies to get at. If the Peel Away works I am sure in an old house you can find 19 other things to do while it does its thing. Sounds like you are all excited and eager to get at it. I can't say I blame you.

I have used Peel Away. It does work.

Does it drip? I was thinking of using it on a bunch of molding that has been painted....much of it up high on the wall. It sounds lazy and devine LOL

Igloo - Welcome to the forums, saw your house and I was floored!!!! Man what a house!!!!

Peel Away spreads like the consistancy of pudding and you place a special paper over it to keep the chemical wet while it strips. Peel the paper away and remove all the remaining glop and you most times are down to the bare wood (unless like me you had 130 years worth of paint to remove). The stuff works on vertical surfaces and even had it stay stuck to the overhang of my porch. It burns the skin like oven cleaner, so gloves, painting suit, etc.

Why is toxic always so efficient LOL

Thanks for sharing. I hope to get pregnant in the next couple of months so this sounds like a job for the future! But it does eventually need to be done as the wood in the new house is spectacular and I don't think the orriginal owner ever wanted any of it painted. I have a feeling it was done when it was a hospital in the 20's so lucky me, only a hundred years or so of paint build up lol

Thank you for the compliments to the house. We feel pretty lucky....and probably will feel more so when we move in heh heh

I used Peel Away "6", specifically, because that's what I found at the store. I saw a post that Peel Away 1 will discolor wood. I didn't cover the product with the paper, and it did not dry out, in the time I allowed it to dwell. I read somewhere that someone else used wax paper, rather than Peel Away's papers and it did just as well. Regarding evaporation, I checked my scrapings (the left over goo that I had removed), the next day, and they were still soft. Here's the MSDS on Peel Away 6: http://www.dumondchemicals.com/pdf/peel_away6.pdf. It's pretty interesting.
