I have set up the eBay search with email notification.

I have been to the Demolition depot site. That toilet does look like a very good possibility. I will call them this week. It is at the NY City location. I did a mapquest search and learned it is on Manhatten Island. I don't mind driving the distance, but driving into NY City is somewhat daunting. Although I do drive in Washington, DC and Baltimore, NYC seems so intimidating. I really would like to see it to be sure the color is right. I guess I should recruit a navigator to ride along.

Before I contact othrr salvage sites, I will get the book The Well Appointed BAth and try to find the color and some numbers for the model.

Thanks for all the help.

Nancy,
Demolition depot is on East 125th St. in Harlem. Well north of the city traffic. If you do drive up - stay in Jersey til the George Washington Bridge. You will completely avoid Manhattan.

I got a price for the toilet from Demolition Depot. $1,150 plus at least $200 in shipping, probably more. I can drive there and back for MUCH less. They emailed several pictures, and tell me the color is "India."

As much as I would love to have the matching toilet, I am not sure I can bring myself to spend that much on a rental house, although the current tenants are wonderful. It is a farmhouse that has been severely remuddled by the previous owner.

I requested the "Well Appointed Bath" book from the library. I may look a little longer. The guy commented they have had that toilet a long time.

Oh My Gosh, that epitomizes price gouging! And as you said, it's a rental house and your tenant has himself a sweet deal anyway...... That toilet may pop up sometime in the future. You are making progress w/your search, you now have a name, "India". Please shoot me a private email with a picture of the same toilet in any color. I always check out the green toilets for you in my ramblings, a picture will make it easier.

DC is MUCH worse than NYC as far as traffic and driving goes.

But at least I know DC, I know absolutly nothing about NYC. I drove through NJ to Nyack, NY several years ago (alone), arriving after 11 PM to deliver old French doors. I had visions of taking the wrong exit, crossing a bridge I didn't want to cross into the city and being totally lost. Fortunately, the only problem I had was less than a mile from the final destination, and even that was minor. But I was on the edge of my seat for that trip.

Reminds me of back in 1979 we decided to take a quick honeymoon trip to NYC ,the toll lady said "take the next exit it's the Jewish section nice hotels etc." Well the next exit ended up being Harlem at 8 pm at night we drove around in circles until after a few rocks and kicks being thrown at the car we ended up with a police escort to the real Jewish section
Never again , I think NYC would be cool to visit if you know somebody there that can give you the 10c tour.

On the real subject though I do the same thing with rental properties,if I cannot find what I am looking for I just put something in its place and sooner or later the right one pops up. The main salvage yard here shut its doors a victim of the housing drop and no available demo projects. In a way it is a good thing in 2006 70,000 homes a month in the US were being demolished :(

What is it with vintage stuff? somebody says it is old so the price doubles, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.I finally found my lighted vintage medicine cabinet the person had it on craigslist for $300 after a couple of month's they delivered it to my door for $35. :)

Darn!!!

Demolition Depot looks like a cool place - We were in Manhattan last weekend and while I did intend to look for salvage yards to visit on the way down and back, my research of hotels/bars/restaurants/comedy clubs got in the way

As an aside we went to the Tenement Museum and did the 'Moore' tour since Niks' parents were Irish immigrants to England (via India - but thats another story) WOW! amazing, but the tour guide kept saying "don't touch the walls" NO WAY would I want to touch the walls, I was too worried about the air I was breathing

Although it was interesting to see the layers and layers of wallpaper (someone papered over the picture rail  ) and the layers of linoleum, I was highly annoyed by the tour guide sitting on the original window sills

We walked into the first room and I pointed out to Nik that at least we have all of the plaster on most of our walls - The Purple House is not as much as a money pit as we thought

The redo of that bathroom is still several years away, so there is lots of time to look. The downstairs bath off the master bedroom will be the first remodel. The PO enclosed part of the wraparound porch for the bath. They didn't bother to level the floor, still has the original porch slope. The 1990's jacuzzi tub has a high spot in the middle so it is dificult to sit in. So they hike upstairs for showers. Since it is not original, we are not trying to make it truely period, just sort of blend in, with a better arrangement.

The upstairs bath still has the original sink and tub, along with a more modern white toilet and everything is in working condition. The current tenants have been looking online for a matching toilet as well. Mary called and spoke to someone, who told her the color was Ivory Dementia, although it doesn't look like "Ivory" at all. But she hasn't kept a record of who she calls and the websites she visits.

I picked up some paint color chips that are VERY close in color, I think I will send them to the salvage warehouses when trying to verify a color match. The search continues!
