Paint or re-stain cedar shingles?

Postby Tiesl on Sun Sep 25, 2016 10:19 am

We bought a 1920 colonial about two years ago. It was recently shingled over Clapboard and apparently stained with a dark blue matte Opaque stain. The stain, especially on the south side of the house, is flaking and looks pretty awful. We received a quote for a paint job and we are wondering if we should paint over the stain or restain. Would like the paint to last for a while so our inclination is to paint. Please advise as to whether this is a good or bad idea! TIA!
