Significantly sloping floors...should we run?

Hi there everyone...

My husband and I are currently under contract to buy an 1891 cottage style home in the deep south (read: wet).

We are no stranger to older homes (last home was a 1900 craftsman in Minneapolis).

The new home has a significant slope to the floor in one section of the house. On the ground floor, there is what I would call a ridge line, running from wall-to-wall, where the floor drastically drops, almost like a gently sloping waterfall. There is a 3 inch differential in some places from wall-to-wall, according to the contractor who looked at it.

The foundation is a pier and sill set-up, something I'm not very familiar with. We had the foundation looked at by a foundation repair specialist after the home inspection raised serious concerns with the integrity of the foundation. They agreed there are some foundation problems, and suggest repairing it by adding several more sills, lifting the floor, and bracing the foundation to limit any more sinkage. The quote is $20,000.

We have not bought the house, and are still in the inspection stage, so can run away at any time. The thing is, we love the house and the neighborhood and don't really want to run. We are actually the second buyers for the home - negotiations fell apart over this very issue on the first offer due to the sellers refusal to lower asking price. Apparently, the sellers are of the opinion that they have lived with the floor this way for 30 years, and so why should it be an issue?

My question - any one with experience here? How serious of an issue is this? Should we stand our ground and run if the sellers refuse again to lower asking price? Our old home in Minneapolis had sloping floors, but no issues with the foundation.

I'd take any advice/thoughts/opinions here!
