I’m looking for some guidance about safely hanging a porch swing. My 1920 house is balloon framed, with a hipped roof front porch, covered over in vinyl siding. I removed some of the porch ceiling panels in the location I want the swing.
The ceiling joist is old dimension 2.5 x 4 inches just under 7 feet long. It’s toenailed to the gabled (non-load bearing) front of the 2.5 story house and at the outside end rests on a built up ledger that looks like a beam but is just a 3-sided “box”.
If this was platform framed with an outside beam and conventional attachment to the house structure, we’d sister the undersized ceiling joist and mount the swing.
Should we sister the joist anyway? What other solutions are there? My spouse sees this as either no swing or tear off and completely rebuild the front porch!
Thanks for any suggestions.
