Old Building Being Saved....Yeah!!!!

Postby Barbara001 on Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:15 pm

About one block from where I live is an old abandoned building. It is called Barra Castle, and was built by a single woman in the late 20's who lived in the original Barra Castle in Scotland. She used her inheritance to build this structure. Upon her passing, the building was converted to 18 apartments. Several years ago it was condemed due to safety standards and has been sitting there abandoned since 2006. Everything is pretty well destroyed, it was constantly being used for raves, drugs, parties, etc. etc. The interior was desecrated.

(this a long video, but it will give you an idea of what kind of condition this building is in now, how on earth this could happen is beyond me.)

I thought this building was doomed, but after many protests and petitions this building is going to be saved!

So happy to hear this, unfortunately the back of the building was so badly damaged it will be replaced, but the front will be revived to it's former glory.

Very cool old building, the pics make it look nice, the video tells a better story, although the one thought that crossed my mind is that at least its more intact than my place. Grand old buildings almost always have the same story, they were beautiful for the first 30-50 years, then they become flop houses, then they are abandoned, only the lucky ones get saved.

I wish that building was closer to me 8)

I was reading an article the other day about the Detroit land auctions,in the background of one of the pictures was an abandoned apartment building that looked like the sister of that building I wonder if they were built by the same builder?

Wow. So I guess the video was a few different trips showing how bad the building was getting?

I wanted to yell at the camera guy, stop, slow down, zoom in on the...

What a shame it got so bad. Who ever is fixing it up sure has their work cut out for them.

It's a mess; of course the vandalism appears to have caused the worst damage. There is a huge Federal colonial mansion in Carlisle that was closed for some time & someone finally burned it 2 years ago; there was a plan to save it but I doubt anyone will. http://onapier.smugmug.com/gallery/1468 ... 6426_qkw4w

Don you really know how to make somebody's day depressing  It seems like there is a certain attitude of some old building owners,If I cannot fix it nobody will so it can just sit there until it rots or falls down.Or gets burned down
