Well, here's a cut crystal or glass one, in an egg shape:

These are about 4" in diameter and are actually sold by a drapery company as oversized curtain rod finials:

I know this thread is old, but I just came across it. Does anyone know if two crystal newel caps are required if the staircase has two newel posts? My father is going to have his house paid off soon, and it would be a great gift, I think...
