composition shingles

I own a pre-war local-vernacular house with composition shingles for exterior.Does anyone have any suggestions about how to or what to use for painting? Oil-base,latex top, oil-oil? As far as I can determine,it hasn't been painted in at least 25 years, so that lead problem may be a factor.I live in central N.Y.,so temperature extremes can also be a factor.Appreciate any help. Thank you.
