Just beautiful. You've put into just a few words precisely how I've felt since moving into my old house. Thank you.

yep - so hauntingly discouraging owning an old houses sometimes. Kind of in an existential way.

"Does it matter?" I've asked this question myself. Why am I pouring so much of myself into a house? Is it my legacy, like writing a book? What if the next person ruins it or no one takes care of it? Do you wonder if the person who built the house, stood back and wondered how long it would last, and whether someone would undo it? Did it matter to him, or was it just another house....

Even more so when whatever I'm working on has been broken/whatever for 100 years.

Nobody bothered with it for the last 100, 80, 50, 10? years? Why now? Does it make any difference?

Since the weather took off part of our roof Saturday night ( http://cupolaart.com/2012/10/15/roof-woes/ ) I get a good excuse to fix stuff I guess.

Oh yeah...so many things you mentioned hit home for me as well. I have always felt that, even though I pay the mortgage, this place belongs to the "Peeps" as I lovingly refer to them. All those folks that lived & died here. If they did actually die in my house...I'm cool with it.

Whenever I'm working on things, I often sort of talk to them. Make sure they know I'm doing the best to keep things as they were when the place was built. I think they know that I love this place as much as they did.

Will anyone notice....I do...and they do. That's all that really matters to me.

Yes it matters & repairing things that were "Let Go" by the POs give me a lot of satisfaction. Our ghost seems to approve.
I wouldn't like myself if it were otherwise.

I swear that when I cant find a particular tool I need its because the "Ghosts" are unhappy with my work and have hidden it.

No, that's because construction sites of any kind are black holes that suck up tools :)
The only difference to normal black holes is that the tool kind sometimes agrees to release some of the lost tools again.
The bad thing with electricity : it almost always works.
