Can you make Beadboard?

Postby mifarmmomma on Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:49 pm

I just realized that we have a wood shop that has almost every tool imaginable. It's my FIL's, but he's not able to do the work out there, but could easily tell my hubby how to set the tools up. Most of them, we've bought, specially to do our house, so this would be a good use for the $1,000's we've spent!

If I remember correctly, they are tongue & grove on the verticle but are they just flat, or beveled? I really HATE panneling...and that's what my hubby wants to put up... I was excited to just get him to come over to my side of the fence...he doesn't have ANY design instincts what so ever...but thinks he does!

Are there any salvage warehouses near you? I got 25' for far less than I would have spent on the lumber to make my own. On the other hand the paint-stripping took weeks.
But it might be fun to make your own.

Geez, I don't know if I would tackle beadboard, and I kinda know what I'm doing in a workshop. For the cost of it, it likely makes more sense to buy beadboard, and spend your time on something else.

Yes you can make your own beadboard. A shaper is nice, but a table saw moulding head is also excellent. Buy the 1" wide blank blades and cut your own knives.

Its not that hard to make your own if you want. However if you are referring to Victorian type bead board, I think this link might be what your are looking for. http://www.homedepot.com/Building-Materials-Moulding-Millwork-Paneling/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5Zbb0v/R-100484661/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Yes you can make it. All you need is a router and table. Freud makes a beadboard bit set.

They sell them at Rockler

The tough part would be finding the thin stock (or planning thick stock down)

I know for sure we have a planer, and router table & LOTS of bits for the router! We bought a HUGE set of them when we decided we were going to have to match some wood trim that was in my Great Grandparents house that I think was more of a Victoran Cottage. We don't have many salvage yards around...our part of Mi isn't into restoring homes, just modernizing...which isn't us!

Hubby said that we could probably buy the lumber, if can make it fit in the non existant budget!
