Hi Sooth, those windows of yours are not that unusual. Thats what my house, built in the 18th century has, and my fathers, built in 1949 has as well. It definitely is one of the lower priced windows, at least in the 20th century. But its definitely a window type that has been used for centuries.

Love this thread!

I've always read about people restoring windows and been convinced that there was something wrong with my windows, because there's not a rope to be found. :D

Glad to know we're just continuing tradition by using sticks (or books, or old pieces of random wood...) to hold them up!

Hi Sooth...I will probably revisit the window in the spring, once the weather is warm enough to work outside again( no indoor work shop). I will try repairing the affected area if it doesnt work out I may have to buy new. There doesnt appear to be any
crafts person locally who does this kind of work. Funny though, there are literally hundreds of old Victorian houses just like mine with old windows. Oh well if all goes well with the repair maybe I will put up my " shingle" and start a new business.Always in need of extra money since I have a very " needy" house.
Hi Catya...Just posted my post and noticed yours...Checked out the link you left. Thanks now I can stop using the off cuts
of hardwood flooring for my stops.

My windows have a spring loaded thumb post mounted in the frame. The windows have zigzag steps cut along the right side. To open- you push in the post, lift the window and release the post at the desired spot. The post catches the step in the wood. I've lived in alot of old houses over the years and this is the only one that had this type of window.
