c 1891 NJ home - certain "type" ?

Postby mcg on Thu Jun 09, 2011 1:36 pm

Hello all,

We have been looking for a house lately and ran across this one during an open house. It says it is circa 1891. While I am a big fan of the "charm" that it has, I really know nothing about older homes. Does this appear to be a certain "type" of house? It's located in NJ right outside of Philadelphia.

A little info on the house, it's about 1900 sq ft, 3 floors plus a large basement. 4 beds, 2.5 bath, 2 fireplaces, and has a "parlor" room with sliding pocket doors.

Very nice house; it appears to have some late Victorian as well as colonial features.

Gable-fronted Queen Anne with a full width front porch and prominent (two story?) angled bay.

Agreed that it's Queen Anne, with the characteristic asymmetry and a bit of a rambling feel. Pretty piece of property.

thanks for the input. here are a few bigger shots of the home. we are going to check it out again tomorrow with our realtor, this time in much more detail.

from the quick look we saw last time, it appears to have 200a electric and the plumbing seems to be in decent condition, with a lot of water pressure everywhere. i'm worried about the roof and foundation, things i really know nothing about. I will get some pics of the interior, which has a ton of character and a really unique feel to it.

Still love the looks of it.

Watch for electric that has had the BOX updated, but the wiring still consists of knob-and-tube from 19 aught 3.

I recommend hiring a trustworthy professional inspector; go through the house with him/her because you learn a lot more that way, and can ask questions. You can enjoy rehabbing a total disaster if you know what you're getting into. It's the nasty surprises that can kill your buzz. Good luck and keep us posted!

Just looking at your pictures, the house appears well maintained & the roof may be fairly new as it looks like it may have a ridge vent (hard to tell for sure!)

 I just gotta say it ~ I love what I see so far!!!! As DonM said, it does look well maintained (to my untrained eye) and even the porch looks original. Can't wait to see what's inside - good luck!

hey guys, i have some pictures of the interior (from the listing). as you can see, some of the old pieces are still in place, along with some upgrades. the hw floors on the first floor are fairly new, and the kitchen was redone about 10 years ago. the 2nd and 3rd floors have new carpet and paint.

Very nice, wonderful unpainted woodwork in many rooms; looks like the cast iron base board radient heating? Even a garage carriage house!
