Home offices?

Postby Nes on Thu Jun 16, 2011 1:19 pm

I do graphic web design so I've got a great opportunity at our new house to actually set up a little office at the front here. 8)

I'd love to see what other people have done with storage and such for their places?

We're going to eventually do some built-in style bookcases and I'm going to have to make at least one a full cabinet to hide all my miscellaneous computer junk. But I also don't want to hide all our lovely big baseboards & such behind tons of shelving.

I've also got a HUGE ugly file cabinet that I'd really like to keep in my office for convenience :?.

Hi Nes,
I like your blog so far. I agree with you on the tools. We have 4 horses on our 28 acre farm & have accumulated a lot of tools over the years. I do like the plastic forks because they are lighter & have just the right shape to scoop up droppings on the stone dust runs we have. I also like the double wheeled wheel barrows as they are more stable & easier to control than single wheeled ones. Having the correct tool for a job makes all the difference in ease of use.

We converted our front parlor to our home office. It still serves as a parlor, but we put a desk and two small bookcases at one end of the room. Although the furniture is pretty, the desk and surrounding area are a mess, er, I mean they are filled with creative clutter.

Since the bookcases flank the desk, the woodwork is all hidden, but storage is the priority and there is plenty of original moldings throughout our home so we don't miss it. I would LOVE to have built-ins, but we can't do that ourselves and its not in the budget to do it otherwise. I look forward to seeing updates on the progress of your project. Having a home office is something that really makes me happy. In the past we had the desk and computer in both the kitchen and dining room, neither of which I liked. Now that DH and I work at home more often, I like it even more that its tucked away in the parlor. Good luck with your project!

I have a home office set up in what was a small bedroom. The only trick I can share with you is that I hid the filing cabinet in the closet. I've been looking for a nice old rolltop to hid the computer when not in use- beyond that I haven't gotten very far.

Our home office is in what was intended as a dressing room. It has 3 closets & is tiny. There is a large antique oak desk from my grandfather's department store, a typewriter 4 drawer wood filing cabinet, a maple computer desk, a rolling wood desk chair & a wood step stool. When Susan & I are both in there it's pretty tight and as Oldhouseluvr said it's filled with creative clutter!

Both my wife and I work out of the house. We built a tiny office when we added the addition. it's 6' X 7.5'. It's pretty... um... cozy. To make that work with two work stations, built-ins are key - we have a pocket door on the room, a book shelf built into the wall, another floor to ceiling built-in just outside the door and a wrap-around built in desk with tons of storage, including six drawers that have been built to accommodate files. Not a square inch is under utilized.

I have a home office in my front parlor as well (we have two). I work my full-time job out of the house and needed comfortable and functional. I don't have built-ins but I do have a regular desk with a credenza behind and a shelving unit on that. I DON'T like to face the wall so I probably use up more space than is really necessary, but again, I don't do walls. LOL I also want to be able to see out of the front of the house as well so my chair is right next to one of the 3 tall narrow windows in the room.

I also use the room for my two sewing machines and there is a TV and loveseat. I'm looking for an oversized ottoman to go in front of the loveseat.

Ooh, Chris - I love your in-wall shelving. I have something that looks similar, where some PO installed shelving between the door frame and the old chimney in my front bedroom. I have finally decided to make that bedroom a home office. It has the larger closet (house only has 2 closets, both add-ons), and stays relatively cooler than the other bedroom (also, only two BRs). I wanted to use the small room that was half of the original front porch, because it can be closed off from the living room by the original front door. Unfortunately, it has become the most practical place for all SIX litter boxes - one for each cat, so it's no longer available. If I use the front bedroom, I can still have an antique settee there as well as my Victorian desk, printer stand, AND I can keep the kitties out. I was planning to move all the furniture out anyway to re-do the floor this summer, so will sell it instead and move the other furniture in. Can't wait to get done!

When we purchased the house back in the late 1990's I was fortunate to get the 3rd floor to use as office space, and a place
to display my railroad collection. Took a while, but the results came out as planned:
