re-glazing clawfoot tub

Postby arewedoneyet on Tue Sep 06, 2011 9:45 pm

We're using as many of the old plumbing fixtures as we can for our restoration. Are there techniques for reglazing old tubs that work well? Also, any advice on cleaning up the outsides? I was thinking about getting it sand-blasted and powder-coated by an auto-body place. Is this the right approach? Any advice?

Thanks

Sorry, no answers to your questions, but I had to stop and say I LOVE your user name! What a hoot!

Not sure you would be able to just powdercoat the outside of the tub.

Sandblast it & have the autobody place prep & paint it if powdercoat doesn't work. If you have the tub out for that look into having it professionally refinished on the inside as well. The glaze kits don't have a very good reputation in my experience.

We're actually going to be doing a salvaged clawfoot in our master bath that we bought about 8 years ago. It is in decent shape, but not great. I've never liked the idea of the spray in place refinishes, since I hear they chip easily and don't often last much more than 8-10 years with normal use. We found a place that we're probably going to use. It's http://nospraytubs.com/. They cost a bit more, but it seems to be a good service. Worth a look. At the very least, give them a call and ask about their product and how it is different than other approaches.

I've just scoured their website and watched half their videos... and I still have no idea what their process is! Do you know? They say over and over (and over and over) that they don't paint or spray. But they NEVER say what it is that they do instead. Do they enchant the tubs with magicks or something?!

When I contacted them here is what they had to say about it:

"Simply put, we use a SPR cleaners to get the porcelain super clean of all dirt, grime, rust, stains, discoloration...what ever is ingrained into your porcelain... we will remove it. Once that is finished, we apply a very light galactic clear coat that brings back the shine. It dries immediately and will never flake off or peel like painted tubs often do."

Once we get to that point in the work, we'll surely try to do a blog post about it.

I think I would have preferred Magic of some sort. Have any of you restored the outside of a tub? We are debating paint, powder coating or doing nothing.

Thanks

What the heck is a "galactic clear coat?" Sounds like something you'd use if you were having the Enterprise detailed. :P

I'll let you all know after I check it out, but I doubt it will be any sooner than three months from now. I have too many other projects I need to finish. Ugh.

This seems like the best idea for the outside of the tub for sure. Or if you are good with t spray can, painting it yourself would do the trick.
