repointing mortar tinting?

Postby steponmebbbboom on Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:19 pm

Hi, I'm wondering how I can mix mortar for repointing my brick to match the colour of the mortar that is already there. I do not know if the original mortar was tinted or if it has darkened red from the rain eroding and washing brick pigment over the mortar, but what I do know is that all repointing that has been done to the house sticks out like a sore thumb due to the drastic colour differences. This is an original exterior wall that sits inside a rear porch addition, that was exposed by a previous owner:

If anyone has suggestions or experiences regarding brick sealer coatings, that would also be appreciated.

Looks like it might have been colour washed, which was an old method used on brickwork. It was done with a mix of Alum, Copperas and Red Ochre for that colour.
