Red Roof...Exterior Colors??

Postby bunny » Fri Feb 26, 2010 6:23 pm

The roof on our house is red and has many years to go...the PO's painted the house gray with black and white accents. I would like a little more color but don't want to clash with the roof. What colors would look good with a red roof?

Hi,
A classic paint scheme is Yellow/ivory siding, White trim (museum white, cameo, etc) and dark green accent/shutters. (chrome green with black added/essex green).

Gray and yellow are the 2 colors that I think go nicely with red, and since you have & don't want the gray, then my suggestions, like Casey's, is yellowish. My house is creamy yellowish with red roof. (In our case, when we got the house the steep part of the roof was done in siding shingles painted to match the walls - we redid it in red.) I'm planning on taking the house to a more intense yellow-brown - California Paint's Farmhouse Ochre - and that goes nicely with red, too.

Here is a link to a picture of the house...it's just looks too masculine and 'dark' to me. I want a house I'm happy to come home to!

Bunny, it's a lovely house! I love the red roof, and if it were mine, I'd paint it white. I have always had a fondness for that combination.

A few examples for the yellow and green scheme:
http://www.marios-reisen.de/fotos/06_08 ... nbrunn.jpg (Vienna, Austria, supposedly the inventor of that scheme)

There are quite a few variations, no such thing as an "official version" of the yellow. Here is one with red brick trim and white windows:

The bad thing with electricity : it almost always works.

Here is my most scary example. I am not afraid of colors.......

I am in the process of painting all the gutters and the overhang in dark green...

The link for the house picture seems to be gone now - do you have another? As for ideas - the colors that Texas Ranger showed of the European buildings are great - I love that spicy golden color - like acorn squash or dark honey - great colors. Green is also a natural offset to red and from a victorian perspective, has always been part of the two main colors of interior decor - red and green - even if its not christmas! Something about them being complimentary colors on the color wheel. Without seeing the house - it's hard to make any suggestions - but the squash color with a creamy white trim and a onyx green shutter - could be stunning. . .
