Transom Window question

Postby Hoosier Foursquare on Tue May 01, 2012 1:50 pm

For those of you out there that have operating (or non-operating) transom windows, do any of you have the variety that pivots in the middle of the sides of the sash instead of the bottom of the sash?

We have 4 doors that originally had transoms in them. The glass is long gone and the spot where the window went boarded up. I uncovered one of them that leads into our kitchen from the rear servants stairs and found evidence of what used to be there. At the time when I was working on it, I didn't have any additional resources to aid me in finding hardware or knowledge to get them back into 100% working condition so we ended up having a leaded glass insert made and I installed it and trimmed it out.

The other 3 transom canidates are still boarded up but I assume that I will find the same as I did on the other. But, I would really like to see if there is anybody out there that has or has knowledge of these types (center pivot) of transom windows and how exactly they operated

My transom window in the foyer door pivots in the centre. It pivots on regular window spring bolts and has a transom catch at the bottom centre.
The transom window over the front door has a much more interesting window stay pole with a friction catch consisting of two wafers you squeeze together to release the pole, which then slides up or down to open or close the window. But the window pivots at the top, not the centre.

Thanks for the replies and the links to those parts suppliers. After looking at the parts and what I believe to be the original mounting holes, I'm kind of stumped. It appears that my transom may have only had a plate that covered the hing pivot point unless it was a cast metal socket that sat within the hole.

I've attached a few more pictures for reference. One of them shows the mounting point on the right hand side of the transom opening and the other picture shows the opening fairly soon after I discovered it due to the fact that the front piece of wood that is covering the opening hasn't been removed in this picture yet.

I've also included a picture of leaded glass pane that we had made. It's beveled glass diamonds over house bevels which match some of our other windows in our house and Carriage House.

That's the tough one that I've had to improvise in the past. Try contacting Tom Joyal at http://www.oldhouseparts.com. He salvaged quite a few transom parts from the Maine State House and may have what you need.

I love your leaded glass pane. My front door transom does not need one of those. I'll keep working to convince myself of that!

If you end up not being able to convince yourself otherwise.....We had ours made by Orca Glass (http://www.orcaglass.com). They are located in Canada and do awesome work and are super-easy to deal with. At my wife's request, I checked around locally for a stained glass/window artisan . The quoted priced was in the neighborhood of $400. Orca Glass was able to custom build to my spec. and ship the individual pane to my house for $98 with a two week turn around time!!
