What would this look like??

Postby roush9799 on Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:51 pm

I have wood trim in my kitchen with wood doors, and wood floor. PO's have cheap wood cabinets in the kitchen from probably the 70's era. What would it look like if I painted them white? Or another color? Would it look odd since the rest of the kitchen is trimmed in wood? I can't afford new cabinets at this time.

We have large original wood trim, 2 windows and 5 doors in our kitchen and I painted our 70's era cabinets and left the trim and doors unpainted. It looks 1000 times better. I don't have wood floors exposed, but they would still look fine.

I wouldn't think twice about painting them. The white may break things up nicely.

You might want to paint them off white if you wanted a little more of an antique appearance; also you could change the hardware to change their appearance.

They don't have hardware on them. They didn't even bother putting it on so I guess I can add whatever I want.

I'm going for it. I found a creamy white color me and my wife like. I have an unused above the stove cabinet in the basement that's broken that matches the kitchen cabinets. I'm going to test it out on it and see what it looks like. These c abinets are dark brown. The panels in the door fronts have 1/4" grooves in them. I'm going to try and leave the grooves the dark brown. I'll take some before and after pics.

You may need/want to primer them first. Depending on how dark they are, and what kind of paint your using. I used Zinsser 123 bullseye stuff for primer because ours were super dark old and yucky. No matter how many times I scrubbed them, they were yucky. Also, if you have any shelfs that are all warped or just gross, melamine sheets/shelf pieces at Menards work great for replacements, no lining required super easy to clean! :0)

You probably already know what your doing, so, Happy Painting! Can't wait to see pics :0)

I painted one door on the old cabinet in the basement and hung it on the cabinet in the kitchen. I think it will look great, and will really brighten up the kitchen. I left the grooves in the front face unpainted and dark. I've got to take the door back off and paint the cabinet and the inside of the door.

Those cabinets look pretty well made; better than I expected from your description. The paint is nice.
