Ash Pit, Smoke & Embers

Sun Dec 17, 2017 3:56 pm

I bought a house and used the fireplace for the first time 5 nights ago (on a Tuesday). The morning after we used it, I shoveled up the ashes but some of the ashes and remaining log fell through the ash pit. About an hour later I saw some smoke coming from the ash pit. I figured that some hot embers may have fallen into the ash pit which is why the smoke is there. The smoke stopped by the next morning.

Woke up this morning and there is a smoke smell. Today we went to church in the morning, come back, and I checked the fire place and now again see some smoke coming from the ash pit opening.

I would check the pit via the ash pit door, but there is an addition built onto the house so the ash pit door is either sealed up, or covered up. Either way, I cannot access it.

Is this normal?
How long can an ember stay hot?
How can I clean out the ash pit if I don't have access to the door?

Thanks in advance for your replies and help!!!
