Eden---Funny you should say that---My husband, who grew up with horses, has identified bored-horse gnaw marks on one of the large upright main supports; we think that the carriage house (which would have been basic wood, nothing fancy with servants' quarters or anything) was dismantled and the good bits re-used to build our garage.

"bored-horse gnaw marks"

That's called cribbiting, horses that do this are usually kept in the field with a run-in shed for shelter as cribbiting is detrimental to their health.

Melissa,

Do you live in Indy? I live in Richmond but work in Indy. Would love to drive by and see the garage. Lots of doors too!
We didn't have a garage when we moved here so we had a 3 car extended one built.

Melissa, I obviously need to pop onto this board more often.

Your garage turned out just beautiful. Your decision on the colors was perfect and it really does look like it was born there. And it was. lol

I'm jealous.

You have my deepest appreciation for all of your complimentary remarks, everyone.

**Ahem** I must in the interest of truth and modesty inform HouseNut that I didn't pick the colors. Our sainted PO, Bob, chose them. The house and garage were a sort of shutter green, with pale amber yellow trim on the house but not the garage. Bob chose a nice tertiary shade of red to replace the green, but unfortunately it reads as basic broad-side-of-the-barn red. We have not yet repainted anything. Our intention for the future is to keep the yellow trim, return the sashes to good old sash black, and use a more berry/maroon red for more of an earth-tone, tertiary-color effect.

Here's a Before photo from Bob's painting party, taken by a pal of his (but a stranger to me; my dear husband found this photo online by chance). This color dates back to 1942 according to the recollection of our elderly neighbor. [The photo caption refers to the house as belonging to Bob's petit ami, Scott.]

Some of you may remember that one of the first things we did to our property was replace the garage roof (including most of the rafters). Well, the time has come for us to do something about the walls, floor and foundation. All three are shot to heck. My mom probably will have some questions, but I don't know what, yet.

Here's what we're up against, or at least here's a photo that shows a bit of it. The floor was concrete, but it was poured a LONG time ago.

Latest news on my garage: The building inspector met with my parents on the premises and said dire things about the walls and foundation (i.e. all the parts not totally replaced three years ago). This is all going to be over the heads of the likes of us. I'll still keep you up to date, though.
