We all want to see your gardens and hardscapes.

Our house is surrounded by perennials with a mix of annuals and several other beds along stone walls and other areas.

Here is a shot of the flowers at the side entry and small flower bed behind the house.

Since this is an old farmhouse, we've kept the landscaping simple. I enjoy the splash of color with the sense of space by limiting the size of the garden beds.

Pretttty! What kind of ferns are those? I received 6 boston ferns from my sil about a month ago. I don't have any containers and they really needed re potting, so I planted them on the south side of the house under some shrubs. I'll have to cover them when it gets too cold, but I think they'll make it.
Gosh I want to do some shade gardens around tree's like you have.

You know Kathy - they're a couple of different types - there's a "cinnamon" fern, and I can't remember the others - but - the big BUT here is you have to check on the tags - some ferns are very invasive and will drive you nuts - so check the habits on the tags before you buy or take some freebies (usually the invasive kind which is why they're being given away). Bostons are hanging - they last till frost - then gone - I've tried to bring them in - but too dry in the house in the winter - all they do is shed and make a big mess.

When I got my place, the yard needed a major overhaul!

Utopia, you landscape like I do, LOL I spent my summer ripping out bushes and stumps. In the spring we are going to roto-till all round and put down new grass seed and hope for the best. The people who lived here 1987-2007 were big into gardening... I just want a yard and a swing set. The swing set is in pieces in the garage... that will be next summer's gigantic project...

Yeah, I wouldn't exactly call mine "landscaping"...not yet anyway! More like land CLEARING!!! Took a whole season just to make it presentable! Jeez it was a mess!!!

I refer to it as "reverse landscaping" or "delandscaping."

I feel kind of bad because of how proud the PO was of her garden but... well if she loved it so much she should have stayed put. I don't really feel the need for 2 holly bushes, a rododendron, 6 billion hostas, a thousand ferns, a liliac, a dogwood, and a few other things in a yard the size of ours (ie not very big). I want space for the kids. I don't want to weed under stuff or have to mulch every year ... I just want grass to mow, easy peasy.

The gardens are the sad part of our purchase story. They're magnificant...quite well known, and there is no way in heck I can maintain them and still find time to breath. The PO and her partner worked nearly full time in them, they also had a full time gardener and a part time landscape guy...I don't have an extra staff of four for the gardens (who are we kidding...I don't have staff LOL and if I did they'd be cleaning the bathrooms before I let them play in the yard!).

We will leave the gardens as is for one year, then the next we'll be removing a significant number of the beds to make it a more family friendly space....and a space I can manage with just a little help. Right now I'm just cheering on the deer who eat half of the plants...they're helping me prune down the garden LOL













Those are almost all september to october photo's so you aren't seeing the beds in their spleandor. They really are marvelous, I just can't maintain them myself and the 4 year old isn't much help either
