We will leave the gardens as is for one year, then the next we'll be removing a significant number of the beds to make it a more family friendly space....and a space I can manage with just a little help. Right now I'm just cheering on the deer who eat half of the plants...they're helping me prune down the garden

If you must remove some of the plants don't trash them. You could hold a "yard" sale - literally! My wife would not be able to drive past a house that was selling their landscaping without stopping and buying something. Check out local nurseries for prices an sell yours at a fair price.

A "yard sale" is an excellent idea. I'd stop at one. Actually my daisies and lilies came from a yard sale

When we moved in there were 124 (yes I counted LOL) plants INSIDE the house. I gave them away and it was a frenzy (fun but crazy). So for the garden, in order to keep it sane and not have people trampling everything I actually thought I'd call the local garden club and ask if they want to have a meeting in the garden with the goal of taking home some of the plants that can be reused (I would imagine most can).

But before I do that I have a friend who is a master gardener who is going to come down and advise me and then as things bloom, I'm going to take pictures and put makers where each item is so we know what's here and what can be moved.

I do promise...no trash cans for this yard!!! Just like the live plants in the house (I'm down to five...one is 120 years old so I'm under pressure to keep it alive LOL) these plants and the garden will be respected and hopefully live on in someone elses yard.

I was walking around the house with the dog today absolutely amazed at the detail in our garden. There are so many plants starting to come up, bulb things (no clue LOL they all look like iris to me) blooming things...no clue either, it's wonderful, and intimidating as heck LOL I really am looking forward to seeing it in bloom (before I yank it all out heh heh)

Oh goody, you get to play, "What is it?" I never can remember the names of the plants I have. Sometimes I buy something and it doesn't have a tag, so when people ask, I can't tell them. Most of my bulbs must have rotted from all the rain because nothing came up yet.

Wait Wait Wait, Just wait until your gardens wake up! Most of the old homes have old established gardens w/heirloom plants that are difficult to replace.

I bought my house in March and considered myself pretty plant savvy (not). There were some silvery, stickery looking leaves in a huge oval spot in the middle of the yard on one side. Looked liked dandelions to me and I was thinking, why are all these weeds growing in the grass like this? I killed them!

Well, a few weeks later in a local nursery, there were my weeds - bright orange Oriental Poppies, groan. Luckily, a few years later, wind blown seeds came up under one of my Lilac bushes.

If that wasn't bad enough, that same Spring I pulled down montrous vines from around one of the side doors the POs hadn't used for years, yep poison ivy, I had never seen country poison ivy. All over my face, arms, etc and I'm very allergic and knew what leaves loooked like for sure, but in March.... I was miserable, had to get a perscription and take off work..

i can relate to that country poison ivy, very devious plant, doesnt always have 'leaves of three let them be"

I agree, wait awhile before removing gardens, est. beds can be easier to take care of than lawn,

I would post pics of my landscaping but all I have is a yard full of sandburs, I cant begin to explain how evil and painful sandburs are unless you have experienced one...they are green low growing but get millions of small burrs on them that stick in your skin, all over your clothes, they are PAINFUL to remove and will bring you to your knees if you try to walk with them in the bottom of your feet

A friend on the outer banks had a yard full and her dog had to have surgery to have one removed from his tongue, poor thing : (

I have been enjoying the view of the cotton fields around the house, but they were finally able to bring that in today after all our wet weather....
