pqtex, I haven't found 30" stoves to be the standard for stoves from the 20s to the 40s at all. Most of the ones I've seen are 36" or much larger, like 46". Or they're the small, apartment-size stoves in 20 or 24". Unless I want to remove countertop to accomodate a larger stove, or have a big gap around a much smaller one, then I have to stick to a 30" one. What sites have you seen them on? I'd be glad to drive some if I could find one (gas) in good working condition in that size. Thanks!

Sorry, I wasn't clear on that. I wasn't saying 30" was the standard size in the vintage stoves, but it seems to be the standard in modern stoves.

For example, Sears (online) has over 600 30" models. Go to 36" and it drops to 14 models, and only 7 models for 40" and 7 models for 48." And sometimes those are just the same models in different colors. I'm trying to stay away from all the digital froufrou I don't use.

I have cabinets only on one side of my current stove,and there used to be a larger stove in that place, so I have a lot of flexibility in size.

What repair issues did you have to correct before using your vintage stoves? Expenses? Did you need to add the safety feature to the ovens?

PQ, I think the thing that would be a deal breaker for me would be the finish. Anything else, pretty much, can be repaired or replaced, but the finish would NEVER be the same, unless you can find a place that can do a baked on porcelain finish.

The search for a stove has been very discouraging. My need for a replacement is getting greater and can't be put off much longer.

I have looked at ebay and craigslist and have found a few reasonable/affordable vintage stoves ($200-$600), but they all seem to be "projects" and I sure as heck don't need another project to work on around here. Add to that, none of them have been local. I'd be willing to drive for the right stove, but the distance is certainly a factor in being so selective in looking at them. Most of the time the sellers can't give enough information to make it worth my while to go look at them.

Restored stoves go for mucho dinero and most of the websites that have them for sale don't even list the price, so I don't even know what I'm looking at most of the time. It also seems that there is a waiting list for the restored stoves.

So I started looking at new stoves again. It is difficult to find the size I prefer (40") but there are a few out there. I would be willing to buy a 36" if I liked it well enough. Only thing is that they all seem to have bells and whistles (and electronics) that I really don't want. So I'm back to square one...but now I'm frustrated from searching and searching and searching and...

It isn't even about the money. I know the stove will be the focal point of my kitchen. Most of what my kitchen needs is cosmetic and we can do it all ourselves, so the stove could be my big splurge (within reason). But I can't find what I want.

To top it off, my brother sent me an email today with an old photo of him in the kitchen of his first home. He is standing next to a gorgeous big old stove...and it's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Of course, it wasn't really a desirable vintage stove when the photo was taken...it was just an old stove that came with the house.

My favorite so far is the Tappan Deluxe Super 60.

Have you talked to restorers? The ChambersStoveLovers forum has a couple of ethical restorers and the other members can tell you about ethical companies that do this type of work around the country. If you bought a fixer-upper in pretty good shape, for a reasonable price, you could have it restored. It might not be as bad as you think. Plenty of places carry original parts for these old stoves.
