Bedroom Renovation

This will be my update thread for our Bedroom renovation. Based on previous experience, my projects take a while, so bear with me. The walls have no insulation, the outlets are placed wonky, there is a drop ceiling, and our addition will join into this room via a door. The walls are made of fiberboard, which isn't much of a wall covering.

I figured I might as well take some "before" shots.

I think there was 5 or 6 layers of wallpaper, some of them not bad looking.

Nice room! I like the red stenciled wallpaper. If you make a tracing, we could re-create the stencil.

We scavenged some wainscoting from a family home in the area that was about to be torn down. We are going to paint that white (it's already painted grey) with the top of the room blue like so

We've been experimenting with blues to match this painting but are having trouble.

We are also going to give these styrofoam ceiling tiles a try. I've given them a couple good squeezes and they seem to hold their shape. Paint seems to hold well to them.

As a decorative painter, I'll advise against being too matchy-matchy. Pick a color that looks good with your painting but dint try to match. If you do, the painting may disappear into the wall.

May I ask where you got your ceiling tiles? I've decided to use ones like those on my living room ceiling, rather than have the whole acoustic-tiled ceiling torn down (can't stand the cost or the mess). I've gotten some samples of ceiling tiles off eBay before, but they were honestly no thicker than the styrofoam wrapping used for packing. TIA for any info.

Well, this looks like a fun project. I'd agree with lisa - don't "match" the painting. If you're set on a blue, I'd take either the top or bottom blue - darker colors - they grays when I did the "squint" test, seem to just blend with the grays in the painting. A room with that dark blue could be pretty dramatic.

The ceiling tiles are interesting - I bet they will work just fine! Can't wait to see progress!!

Thanks for the paint advice. The top and the bottom colours are actually a mixture of the left and right (DW liked the grey, I liked the blue. We mixed them but it was still a little too crayola-ish)

We got the ceiling tiles from http://talissadecor.com/ which is probably the same person who sold them to you on Ebay. They honestly are very similar to a take out container. Once you give them a coat or two of paint they look a lot better. I'll be sure to give my impressions of how they install.

Second day of progress. Mostly just tearing down the closets and discovering the old wallpaper. The original owner obviously put many layers of wallpaper on, but the previous owner must have only put one in the 30 years they were here. Gross.

The room used to be the parlour, so I could see where this wallpaper would fit in. It would still be very mind boggling though.

The room we moved into is probably 40% the size of the master bedroom you see above. It makes for a cozy night with 2 people and 2 dogs. However, it is nice to be in a room that isn't dirty and shabby.

Oh pooh, I loved those closets! BTW, I ripped off our acoustical ceilings tiles, after having them tested, they were glued on, the glue just snapped off when I ran a putty knife between the glue and the ceiling. So yours might not be too hard to remove. I thought I would find beat up plaster, but under 7 layers of wallpaper, the plaster was in great condition.

The closets were nice, but that wall will soon have a door leading to a walk in closet and master bath

An interesting thing we found was wallpaper on the backside of the exterior siding and around the studs. This house used to be a cottage, so it was uninsulated and (relatively) unfinished.

The ceiling tiles were stapled on and were very easy to remove. I am surprised that they didn't sag any and looked fairly good. What I thought was just a drop ceiling was an attempt to fix/cover the crack in the original ceiling. I think the proper way would be to raise the beam to directly under the original joists, and then support it by posts. I'll have to consult with a structural engineer though.
