My 1935 English Style House

Postby tudorrevival on Fri Oct 28, 2011 3:33 pm

*Thanks to Stuart, who clued me in that my house is not a Tudor. :) *

Hello! My name is Jen. I've been reading these boards for a few months now, but this is my first post. I lived in a Victorian house until I was 10, and that sealed my fate as a old house enthusiast. I was completely confused when my parents moved me into a brand new house.

In August, my husband and I purchased a 1935 stone English style house. We looked for a while in order to find something that hadn't been remuddled. It was in relatively good shape, but a bit neglected because no one had lived in it for a couple years and the PO probably hadn't been able to fully maintain it for a while prior to that. The POs really respected the house, but they did change out the interior doors, so we will be replacing those with paneled doors more appropriate to the house.

I don't know much about the house's history, and am in the process of contacting the PO to learn what I can. Our town's Historical Society only has information on houses over 100 years old. Rather short-sighted, in my opinion. Our town only has documents back to the 1980's. The rumor around the neighborhood is that the house was built by a Pittsburgh Plate Glass executive, which would explain the Carrara Glass in the bathrooms, kitchen and on all of the window sills.

Here are some pictures. Thanks for looking! I hope to become an active member of these fantastic forums.

Thanks, Josie!

This house fulfilled some of my old house dreams because it has a second staircase off the kitchen, a laundry chute and a 3rd floor (finished the same time as the rest of the house). I just wanted to add one more picture -- of my doorbell:

Thank you, Stuart. It is a slate roof.

Slate makes a great roof. I'm building an extension at the moment on our cottage and have used slate (14x6inch). Took a while as they are reclaimed Welsh and I had to re hole all 2,200 of them.
Jen, your house reminds me of a typical country vicarage. Is it solid stone, or stone veneer with stud inner walls?

Can I just tell you how much I love your kitchen cabinets? If you ever ever plan to remove them, please let us know!

Really ... Swoon!

Impressive work, Stuart. I really like the clean lines of the slate you chose. It was well worth the effort!

I am assuming that the stone is a veneer, but I don't really know for sure. The house is stone on all sides. The house was constructed in the "junior beam" method, with poured concrete and steel beams. The walls are all plaster, and so is the crown molding.

I am very interested in the comments about the style of my house. In what part of Great Britain have you seen houses that are similar in style? Do you have any pictures? Would these houses commonly be located next to churches like a rectory in the U.S.? What do the insides of these houses look like?

What would you call this style in Great Britain? I know that the term "Tudor" is somewhat overused in the U.S. I wondered myself if my house would just be English Country style instead.

I hope that's not too many questions. Thank you for your comments.

This one is in Whitby, North Yorkshire

There are pictures but be aware that these kind of properties in rural areas are generally rented out so the interior will have been updated.
