How does thatch compare to slate in cost in the UK? Over here, slate's an expensive option for both labor and materials. I would guess thatch would be even more labor intensive... but maybe the raw materials are less.

"The Emerson Hadley House" in 1897. It's a Cass Gilbert house built in 1895.

It's not "mine", we're just taking care of it for the next owner... And blogging about the experience at http://fixfarrington.blogspot.com

My roof is about 60 square yards and the slates which are 14x6 inch cost £600. I was able to do the job myself, but I reckon to get it done for me would be in the region of £3,000.
I would have no chance of thatching it myself and to get it done would be in the region of £10,000.
There are 3 main types of thatch used here. Mine is water reed which used to come from Norfolk, but now is mainly imported from Eastern Europe. Thatch used to be the peasants roof material, but now is really expensive.

Ooo... Somerset? plus it has thatched roof - I'll take it... swoon 8)

LOVELY! I bet there's a jigsaw with a picture of your house on it somewhere, 2 things that we Brits do well, cute cottages and using them on jigsaws

You need to start saving your pennies for when you do have to replace the thatch, but it does last a long time doesn't it?

Oops! wrong picture, that's the "hen" house! This is the place when we first went to see it. It was vacant at the time. The realtor in the picture makes the house look tiny, It has 11' ceilings upstairs and down. the eaves are about 25' from grade in real life. This is the addition. the back "ell" was built circa 1835-1842

I know the pic is big, but I wanted to show the whole place and "some" of the debris that was laying around we had to clean up. It dosen't look to bad, but ther was about 8 20 yard containers taken out of the place after this pic was taken, plus the massive piles of old lumber and trash we burned.
