Painting standing seam roof on 1766 house - color advice

Postby mim4633 on Tue Jan 17, 2012 12:32 pm

Hi all,

The standing seam metal roof of our 1766 saltbox in suburban Maryland is currently painted a brick red, but the paint is chipping and flaking, and we're even having some small leaks upstairs in our bedroom. It seems like the time has come to repaint the roof. We were out in Virginia hunt country this weekend and admitring the many houses with painted metal rooves - red, green, brown or even black. I saw photos online of a historic house with a bronze colored roof and it was stunning. Our house is currently painted a very pale yellow with grey/blue shutters and white trim. I'd like to upgrade the shutters to black and possibly change the roof color to a green - any advice or opinions about those choices?

Any help is welcome! Thanks in advance.

Hi, great house. Love the 18th century places. I like the roof color you have, but think green would work great too. Not a fan of black shutters here myself. If you go with a green roof, I would likely to the shutters in the same color if it was me.
The bronze roof you saw, sounds like what a friend has on his, they called it a copper wash(which I guess must means a color designed to make it look like a more expensive copper roof).

Mine is buttermilk yellow, like the siding on the new part of the house.

Good Lord, if I even had a roof that looked like cooper thieves would steal it the next day, cant hardly have an airconditioner unit w/o and alarm round these parts anymore, times still hard here

Very true Kat, they probably would. A tacky little modern brick ranch house a mile or so down the road was for sale this past year and someone stole the hvac unit right out of it. Have to wonder did they go after the copper pipes and wiring too. You could see the missing hvac unit.

Kat, did you see the response I posted about your replacement flooring question? About calling Triton Wood in Tarboro?

Yep, my old house is out in the Virginia countryside and lots of painted metal roofs. There's really not a lot of variation, and may depend on what color you will ultimately go with on the stutters. Most painted roofs out here are black, green, silver and red (and just plain rusted).

Personally, I like your red roof. I like black too. Mine is black, the house is a gold-yellow and our shutters are black.

Wow, beautiful house, love the porches, double chimneys, and a nice looking lot! More pictures? How many fireplaces?

If you loved the copper colored roof then that's what I'd paint it, it'll look good with your yellow. As for the shutters I'm not a big fan of black shutters but... I have seen them painted a dark dark dark green that is so dark they almost look black - very sharp. Dark green should compliment your yellow also.
