look what was found under a 1880's farm house

My cousin had a basement put under his farm house.And this was under the living room floor. It a two story house,that had two rooms down and two up.

Casey is right,that how some newel post are secure to the floor. Here a picture of the farm house.

I'm confused :? Shouldn't they be secured to a joist or something?
