Got our kitchen transom opened up again (pic)!

Postby Theresse on Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:29 am

I was having some painting one and adding hardware here and there in the kitchen and asked the guys if they could open up the painted-shut transom and they said yes. So I went over to House of Antique Hardware and grabbed a transom latch and chain in polished nickel (and ordered some new matching hinges as well which have yet to arrive) and now the window is almost complete - and open!

Don't know why I'm so excited about it, but I think it has to do with how seldom we see working transoms anymore - in old houses anyway. All the newly-built houses, I've noticed, seem to have transoms now. It's "all the rage."

Anyone else have an old transom they fixed up or are thinking of fixing up? I want to see more pictures...it's amazing how hard they are to find online!

Beautiful!

Yes, I have transoms I am going to restore to working order. All four of my bedrooms open to the living room and all four have transoms. One is missing glass, the others are intact, some still have hardware, but have so much paint on them, they don't open more than a crack. All had been covered by paneling, which I removed. When we start working on those rooms, I will get new hardware and make them all functional.

Very, very nice kitchen, btw!

Yes! I have one over the front door that was broken out and replaced with plywood. I had a window maker in Weston, MO make a replacement for me. I just need to have the address painted on it prior to installation.

I kind of wanted to add a few transom windows to my house (and have stained glass in them), but the house never had them, and I didn't want to change/modify the original look since it's already been remuddled enough as it is.

BTW, you have on of my favourite kitchens on here. So gorgeous! Is it possible to see the other cabinets on the left? I didn't even know you had these in your kitchen till now! Are those original or new copies?

I wish our ceilings were tall enough to have had transoms. They are so cool!

i have a functioning transom and a hook to open it - though i don't know for sure how old the hook is. someone painted the handle goofy colors once which is kind of cool.
