What are you glad you didn't do?

Brian142 posted this on the Craig list Find thread - love it and wouldn't change the layout at all!

When we bought the Purple House I was thinking about altering our breakfast nook because we had the lamest cabinet in the dining room (it would have given us more space in the BN) but then our PO gave us this for the dining room

I'm glad that we took our time - is there anything you are glad that you didn't do?

BTW - the door in the first picture is only resting there, it's the bathroom door and is now upstairs.

The second picture is before we bought the house - although we did inherit a fair amount of the junk that you can see.

Hey lavender-bush...love your wood work..wonderful. The thing I am glad I didn't do is open up the living room/Snug ( a tiny
8x8 room adjacent to the living room). I love my little room, its cozy and in a pinch I can use it as a guest bedroom.

I'm glad the PO didn't burn the Piggery next to the barn! So were my sons!

glad we waited a year before starting any interior projects...actually it will be 4 years in May and i am so glad that we didn't rush on the interior as our plans have changed 2 or 3 times and recently decided to go back to original layout of 3 rooms as they were in 1880 but 2nd owners changed in 1904/05.

Glad I didn't rip off the enclosed porch on the front of the house. It may not be original, but it is my favorite place to sit. Love it.

Glad I didn't tear out the wall between the living room (tiny)and the room we now use as a den to make the LR bigger. The den is the room my wife uses the most. And in the winter, the LR is a cozy place with a fire going.

Also glad I didn't tear out the partition (remainder of wall and header) that were left when the kitchen addition was done in 1936 that seperates the old/new kitchen areas. The way we remodeled, it really takes advantage of the partition to interrupt the line of sight from dining room into kitchen and leaves an area for a secretary for phone, paperwork, etc.

I have lots of "I'm glad I didn'ts", but these are the big three: remove the wall between the hallway and parlor to make the living room larger and more accessible; add crown molding and chair rail in the LR, DR, hall and foyer; and replace the original windows.

Well I'm roll with posting pictures so, here's a few more.

OHluver - we can't really open the parlor anymore than the original designer did, a Victorian open plan, neither opening has any evidence of hardware. Two of the walls are exterior and the other has the fireplace. Furniture placement might be an issue :D

The family that gave us the dining room cabinet removed the screening around the porch that wasn't original, hopefully this year we'll replace the roof that we had to demolish when we bought the Purple House. I'm pretty certain they re-purposed the windows for the upstairs porch but the PO replaced them with new units

I've re-purposed the windows and transom in the upstairs porch, rather nifty I think but i'm surprised how many people try to walk through them.

cs - I know!! we have an underground drainage system because the land floods, it pumps the water over onto our neighbors property ( covered by an easement) - this is what happens when 'someone' turns it off just before the storm of 2010, 8" in the basement and our neighbors had ducks 8)

I confessed but my husband doesn't believe me, He has however bought a childproofing device to prevent it happening again.

The Ikea rug is now back at our 1964 home resting in our screened porch having thoroughly enjoyed it's cleaning and none the worse for wear :)
