"right" kind of turpentine...

Postby pqtex on Sun May 13, 2012 6:20 pm

There have been many discussions about turpentine...the good kind vs the evil smelly kind. I thought I knew the difference, but I opened my new can today and it does NOT smell nice like my old batch. They are both the same brand (Crown). The new can is labeled as Turpentine Pure Gum Spirits. My old can is labeled Pure Spirits Steam distilled wood turpentine. I'm having trouble finding the old kind. What is the right turpentine for the BLO/turpentine wood conditioning mix?

we purchase our boiled linseed oil and turpentine here: http://www.tarsmell.com/products.html

this is also a good turpentine: http://www.recochem.com/us/index.php/pr ... turpentine
you may have to do some looking around to find it in a local store...

turpentine in a plastic container is your best bet and not so easy to find...metal containers tend to react negatively with turps...

we put the 50/50 mix in a 16 ounce jar and apply it with a disposable natural bristle brush with a wooden handle (chip brush)...the brush can be used over and over again and does not need to be wrapped in plastic...

I was hoping to find the turpentine locally, but I guess I may have to order from Jade's suppliers.

First I went into the local Pittsburgh Paint/Benjamin Moore store. They don't carry turpentine at all. When I expressed surprise, he said I was the first person to ask for it in three years.

Then I went to Sherwin Williams. Nope. They don't carry turpentine, or boiled linseed oil either.

I went to my local Ace Hardware. They also carry Benjamin Moore paint, or at least they did until recently. I was disappointed to find out they no longer carry it. The only turpentine they had was the same stinky kind I found at Lowes. So I went across the street to Sutherlands. Same stinky deal. I decided to go to Hobby Lobby, thinking they would carry the "good" stuff with art supplies. No turpentine, but they had turpenoid, and I have no idea what that even is.

The frustrating thing is that I am really trying to throw business to my local paint store, rather than the big box stores, but I can't even get knowledgeable service at the locals.

The weird thing is that at Ace, I saw packages of blank VHS tapes for sale. I didn't even think they were making those anymore, so why can't I find the good old stuff like turpentine???

What gives?
