i, personally, think this looks like a good cheap solution for keeping the windows open:

and those prices are very reasonable:

$20 for one
$54 for 3
$192.00 for 12!

I might be able to get pictures tomorrow.

Then they are called "stays" if you use them to latch the window open. Semantics, but helpful for internet searching purposes. Theres lots out there in varying materials and finishes.

I have seen this setup in varying forms, the latch is mounted on the top or bottom frame rail and the closer to the hinge side you mount it, the further the window will be held open. There's some available that hold the window open only enough to to ventilate but can only be unlatched from the inside for security reasons, they are popular in the UK.

I have 50 year old crank windows but no crank. What am I looking for and where do I find it?

nancy - no disrespect but beginning a new post may be easier than raising an old post.

Nancy,

I have the hook thingies on my windows and they can stand extremely high winds with no problem. My windows are more than 100 years old and still on their hinges....

some of the bedroom windows have an extra small hook for the window to be just ajar.

The push bar mentioned above does not go with inside screens when the bar is half way. It is fine though if the bar is all the way in or all the way out (window fully open or fully closed).

I also have a diffenent kind of contraption that works perfect with the screens:

I have seen it for sale somewhere (not sure where) and it is kind of pricey for what it is.
